Alive and WIP-ing!

I've been thinking about coming back to this blog for a long time, and I've decided it's finally time to do so.  Maybe it's because I'm not at all interested in working right now thanks to anxiety, sleep deprivation, allergies, and stress.  I'll try to make this quick.

I've set myself a task for 2022 and I want to document it a bit more formally.  After not being able to find a pair of size 6 needles (my most commonly-used size, I have a zillion pairs), I realized I have too many UFOs in my life and I need to finish them, so other than paid commissions, I decided that I will not start any new projects in 2022.  I'm sure I won't stick to that, but the mindset of clearing out my Area 51 (you know, where the UFOs live) is freeing.  I've also given myself permission to frog any projects that are no longer inspiring me, or are the wrong size or somehow otherwise no longer satisfying.  I'm going to start by listing my projects in progress.  This is everything that's in my Ravelry projects.  I'll add more as I find them (becaus I know there are more) and start trying to give more regular updates on how it's going.

  1. Windswept sweater, started 11/1/13 - will probably need to frog and reknit in a more current size.
  2. Temperance socks, started 4/7/22 (I told you I wasn't good at sticking to my own rules) - these will be easy once I get to them.
  3. Miss BB sweater, started 4/2/21 - I've been actively working on this one.  It's made out of some handspun merino I bought from the shearer, had processed at a mill, and gradually spun into a lovely woolen yarn.
  4. My phone addict mittens, started 12/6/18.  These are open palm thrummed mittens that I also added an opening in the thumb too,  These will be lovely once I get them done, and I'll probably do a matching hat or scarf with the rest of the yarn.
  5. Hue Shift afghan, started 6/9/15 - I've been regularly working on this one too, it's about 75% finished and has been fun all the way along.
  6. Kilt hose for my now ex, started in 2013 - I need to talk to him about if he'd be interested in me finishing these.  Otherwise I'll frog them and use the yarn for something else.
  7. Ancient socks for the ex, started 5/13/11 - Same as above.
  8. Ten stitch baby blanket started 12/23/10 - I started this for a friend who had a baby on the way, and that kid is now almost a teenager.  Not sure about this one.
  9. Aidez sweater, started 3/18/2017 - This yarn was a gift from my sister in law when I completed my master's degree.  I'm not sure about the pattern or sizing.  I guess we'll see.
  10. Able Cable sweater for the ex, started 10/15/15 - I handspun the yarn for this too.  The pattern was awful.  I think I'll frog this one and make something for myself.
  11. Eleanora de Toledo stockings for a friend started 6/5/20 - These ones need to be moved into active work as soon as I get bandwidth.  They're a huge project that is going to be epic.
  12. Kelley's Ski Sweater for me, started 2/22/15 - Needs to be frogged because it's now the wrong size, but I'll probably start over.  This is a neat pattern.
  13. Outlander Shawl started 8/13/14 - not sure if I'll rip this one or keep going.  I like the pattern but may change yarns.
  14. New Year's socks started 12/31/21 - I'm actively working on these, they'll probably be done soon.

Free Pattern - Gulls and Garter Washcloth

It's lovely and interesting, it looks good in both variegated and solid yarn, and it's fun to knit without being too difficult. Cast on 45 stitches (or a multiple of 8 stitches plus five). Rows 1-4: work in garter stitch (knit every row). Row 5 (wrong side): k4 *p5, k3* to last 4 stitches, k4 Row 6 (right side): k4 *With yarn in front, slip 5 stitches purlwise, k3* to last 9 stitches, with yarn in front, slip 5 stitches purlwise, k4. Row 7: repeat row 5. Free Ribbed Beanie Pattern

Here is an easy little pattern I cranked out when my husband needed a new hat. Feel free to give it a whirl. :) Ribbed Cap Size - One size fits all Measurements : Head size 21" (lightly stretched, fits my head at 23.5") Depth 8" (If you have a large head, you may need to increase this. Just try the hat on as you go.) Materials 1 50 g ball worsted weight yarn (I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Forest Heather) 1 size US 6/4.0 mm circular needle, 1 set size US 6/4.0 double-pointed needles (if desired, hat can also be worked in magic loop), yarn needle Gauge 20 sts = 5" over k4 p4 rib, lightly stretched *take time to check your gauge and adjust accordingly* Note: Switch to magic loop or double-pointed needles when knitting in the round becomes uncomfortable, this will probably be around round 3 or 4, but your mileage may vary. Pattern CO 104 sts, join in round, mark beginning of round. Work in *k4 p4* rib until piece measures 7"

Jacobite Bonnets!

For those of you who've always thought Scotch Bonnets were just a type of flower or perhaps a hot pepper, I've got news for you. They're hats too. Lovely felted wool hats. Think tam-o-shanter or beret on steroids. These babies are lovely, almost completely waterproof, and much softer than wool has any right to be. They were the hat of choice for Scots fighting in the '15, the '45, the French and Indian War, and even the American Revolution. Sadly, these bonnets are now pretty tough to find in this country, especially hand-made, as they should be to be authentic, and in any variety of colors or sizes. That's where I come in.
